‘Steal this film’ is a controversial documentary about the revolution of free culture; free culture is a social movement that promotes the freedom to distribute and modify creative works in the form of free content by using the Internet or other forms of media, basically taking someone’s work without permission, the opposite of ‘free culture’ is called ‘permission culture’. ‘Steal this film’ was shot in Sweden where it features some of the members who were involved in the making of the pirate bay (TPB) website; this website allows users to share files such as: music, videos, media etc. After the files have been tracked you can then download them by using BitTorrent protocol, a widely used standard for peer-to-peer file sharing. The film then showed the damage it has caused in the United States by streaming free media meant that they were going lose profit and that it was a criminal offense against the law because it was copyright.
Another example of free culture is shown in a documentary called ‘RIP: a remix manifesto’ where a music artist called ‘Girl Talk’ takes apart pieces from music and mashes them up to create his own songs, because once it has been taken and modified from its original form it is now a new piece of work.
I think that free culture should be available everywhere and for everyone without any charges made because technology is only getting better by the years and its easier to hack/download copyrighted documents that then cause so much chaos, but i still think that credit should be given to the original source.
